Feb 19: Nepal is observing its 72nd National Democracy Day today and various programs have been arranged for the celebration. From the government’s side, a special program is going to be held at the Nepal Army Pavillion, Tudikhel. The grand program would be attended by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, heads of constitutional bodies and many more.
Former King Gyanendra Bikram Shah also stated that:
“The true democratic system is the system of governance based on representation by the people for the benefit of the people. Democracy without nationality is like building a palace in the sky. It cannot be anyone’s shield, nor can it be anyone’s umbrella of justice. The people and the king have always been and will always be one for democracy including nation and nationality. In the name of democracy, the practice of the last decade has brought unity to a critical state and plunged the people into despair.
The only fault of the leadership in this is that all of us Nepalis must now be ready to review the fact that the system is also changeable. Democracy is not a charity given to someone. Putting the people in hunger, disease and grief is not democracy. It is not democracy to be isolated from the nature and environment of one’s own country and to fall into external greed and temptation.
The question is where democracy is being carried by the chaotic system of a confused government, a broken parliament, a court, a divided electoral system and a divided society. On this historic day, it is our wish that everyone’s attention be drawn to the correct system of governance and law that the people have come to expect and choose.
May Shri Pashupatinath bless us all! Jai Nepal.”
