Date: April 23, 2023

Overview:

Nepal Mountain Academy (NMA) has announced the launch of a new postgraduate program, Master of Science in Mountain and Mountaineering Science (Msc MMS). The program aims to develop highly skilled human resources in the field of tourism and mountaineering through research and analysis of the high Himalayan region.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Sudan Kirati, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, and was attended by numerous subject matter experts. Anil Bhandari, the Coordinator of the program, explained that the new curriculum will enable NMA to offer master’s degree programs in mountain science.

The program, sponsored by Tribhuvan University, spans four semesters and focuses on theoretical instruction in the first year, followed by fieldwork and project assignments in the subsequent two semesters. Tanka Prasad Paudel, the assistant campus head of NMA, highlighted that the curriculum would foster national and international partnerships and research opportunities in the high Himalayan region.

NMA has been offering undergraduate courses in mountaineering at the bachelor’s level, and additionally providing a 35-day training course for trekking guides since its establishment in 2002. The launch of the new program is a significant milestone in the academy’s history.

During the event, Minister Kirati also unveiled the website for an upcoming international conference on mountain climbing and mountain science to be held in Kartik. This is a promising development for Nepal’s tourism industry, which has suffered due to the pandemic.

In conclusion, the launch of the postgraduate program in mountain and mountaineering science is an essential step towards developing skilled professionals and furthering research in this field. It is an exciting opportunity for students interested in pursuing higher education in this area and contributing to Nepal’s tourism industry.
