Female Police Officer Killed in a Clash at Letang; 5 arrested till Monday Morning

A female police officer was killed during a clash at Letang, Morang on Sunday evening.

According to the chief district officer of Morang Kashraj Dahal, female police officer Urmila Shrestha was stabbed in the neck and killed, and 29 police officers, including an SP, were injured.  Since the incident, 5 persons have been arrested till Monday morning.

SP and the Spokesperson of the State Police of Province 1 said seven protesters were also injured during the clash.

The clash occurred in Shiksha Bikash Secondary School located in Kheruwa, Letang. Enraged students, parents and locals started the protest against a 56-year old teacher Manoj Poudel who has been accused of abusing a 12-year old girl in the school during Holi.

Poudel, hiding in the school premises was brought out and beaten by the protesters. A local said that the situation deteriorated when police intervened to arrest Poudel. The protesters had tried to stop the police which resulted in the clash between the protesters and the police.

The police had to fire 15 tear gas in order to control the situation.

A curfew order has been issued in the Letang Municipality area, effecting from Monday Morning. Ward 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the Municipality will be under curfew until further notice.
