A School in Need: Gyanjyoti Basic School’s Struggle with Infrastructural Challenges in Kalikot District, Nepal
Date: [27th March 2023]
Gyanjyoti Basic School in Shannitriveni rural municipality-8 of Kalikot district, Nepal, faces severe infrastructural challenges that significantly impact the quality of education it provides to its 220 students.
Shortage of desks and benches
The school lacks even the most basic facilities like desks, benches, playgrounds, and toilets, which makes it challenging for students to study. Children are forced to sit on the cold floor, which is uncomfortable, and the dusty and windy environment adds to their discomfort. Some students are even taught in the open square or on the ground due to a lack of classrooms. Despite complaints from the school administration and locals, people’s representatives and leaders of opposition parties have not taken action to improve the school’s infrastructural challenges. The budget allocated for the school has not been sufficient to meet its needs, and promises of construction have not been fulfilled. Even temporary solutions have been ignored, and the children have been studying in the dust for over seven months.
Government failed to act
Despite the severe infrastructural challenges, the school continues to offer education from Kindergarten to 8th standard to its students. However, the locals and school administration hope that the government and leaders will take swift action to address the school’s infrastructural challenges and ensure a better future for the students.
The education branch of Shannitriveni rural municipality has monitored all the schools in the municipality, and it is evident that there is a shortage of buildings, desks, benches, playgrounds, and toilets.
