The work is ongoing for the distribution of water from Melamchi to Kathmandu Valley said Umakanta Chaudhary, Minister for Drinking Water. He added the water from Melamchi will be distributed within Mid-April.
An agreement has been reached to bring water from Yangri and Larke rivers to Kathmandu as Chaudhary said there would be a shortage in drinking water even if Melamchi would bring 170 million litres of water daily.
While speaking on a program for World Water Day Chaudhary said the dream of Former Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to feed Melamchi water to the people of Kathmandu Valley will be fulfilled by Mid-April this year. He also expressed the Ministry’s commitment to supply water to community Schools that do not have access to safe drinking water.
Minister Chaudhary said that plans have been put forward to complete the construction of large overhead tanks in Terai Madhes with 80 to 90 percent state investment.
Suresh Acharya, Secretary at the Ministry of Drinking water and Sanitation said it was necessary to make toxic arsenic loaded water clean and safe. Further study and research were needed on groundwater resources, he added.
