The government has decided to give permission to convert petrol and diesel vehicles into electric vehicles. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has decided to provide this three-year exemption for modifying the vehicles into environmentally friendly and energy-efficient forms. Prior to this announcement, changes in the vehicles were not allowed without formal permission.

Article 39(1) Transportation Management Act states that the vehicle owner should not alter the colour of the vehicle, number of seats, shape, engine, or chassis without the approval of the authorized officer. And Article 39(2) states that if such manipulation is required, the authorized officer shall conduct a necessary investigation and find if it is appropriate to make such manipulation.

The Ministry of Transport has implemented a new system with the objective of promoting electric vehicles. The old provisions would not be in an application for those who want to convert their vehicle into electric vehicles.

The registration process for the centres to transform diesel/petrol vehicles to electronic vehicles is yet to begin from the Ministry of Transport.
