Writer Tara Nath Sharma dies at the age of 87

Feb 15. Dr. Tara Nath Sharma, a famous Nepali travel writer, essayist, and literary critic dies at the age of 87 on Tuesday morning.

Sharma had been a patient of various health problems including heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and dementia for a long time.

His funeral rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Tuesday afternoon.

Sharma was born in 1934 in Barbote, Illam. He was a Ph.D. graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US for Linguistics. He has written more than 100 books in Nepali and English and is widely known for his travelogues.

He is given credit for giving the Nepali language a radical identity and popularizing Nepali subjective essay writing. He was even awarded Madan Puraskar for his essay collection Belayat tira Baralinda in 2026 BS.
