Today, a huge number of international students are studying at German universities, with over 370,000 enrolled in the first semester of the 22/23 academic year. This represents a 5% increase on the previous year.

According to recent data, Indian students are now the largest nationality group studying in Germany, overtaking Chinese students for the first time. There is also a significant number of Ukrainian students studying in Germany, with the number increasing by 43% from the last year.

This is happening as the German government has taken effective steps to attract more international students to the country, including making public universities free for international students. The country is also facing a skilled labor shortage, and the government is hoping that international students will stay in Germany after graduating to help fill this gap.

“Germany continues to be extremely attractive for international students and researchers,” said Bettina Stark-Watzinger, the German federal education minister.

“The international mobility of scientists is of utmost importance, especially for successful research activities,” said Monika Jungbauer-Gans, scientific director of the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW).

According to the DAAD, there are approximately 70,000 foreign scientists employed in institutions throughout Germany. This places Germany as the second most pursued-after destination for international researchers, alongside the UK and just behind the USA.
