KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University (TU) has announced that it will no longer be awarding the Chancellor’s Medal, a prestigious honor given to the student with the highest marks in the nine subjects of the master’s level. The decision was made due to the implementation of a grading system in all subjects, making it difficult to distinguish the top student.
“We have been providing the medal to a student who gets the highest marks in the nine subjects of the master’s level. As the results are published based on the grading in the semester system, there is a problem in distinguishing who is the best,” explained Pushpa Raj Joshi, examination controller of the Office of Controller of Examinations, TU.
The medal, which carries three tola of gold (11.66 grams per tola) and a certificate, was traditionally presented annually on TU‘s convocation day. However, with the grading system in place, selecting the most deserving student has become challenging.
“It was possible to easily distinguish the best student based on the marks gained by the student in the first annual test. As the grading system has been implemented in all subjects of the master’s level, the best student cannot be distinguished,” stated TU Registrar Prof Dr Peshal Dahal.
However, TU’s 49th convocation ceremony will be held on December 18 at the Dasharath Stadium. While the Chancellor’s Medal will not be awarded, other recognitions and honors will be presented to outstanding students.
