EDUCATION NEWS IN NEPAL

Over 13,000 Students Receive Scholarships as Schools Comply with New Regulations

Date: 21st June 2023

Introduction:

In a significant development, 465 out of 504 private schools operating within the Kathmandu metropolitan area have submitted their scholarship details, marking the first time in the history of the metropolis. As a result, more than 13,000 students falling within the target category have been awarded various scholarships. The eagerly awaited list of scholarship recipients will be published once the received details are thoroughly inspected.

While the majority of private schools have complied with the requirement, those that have not yet submitted their statements will be granted another opportunity. However, they will be required to pay a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh for the delay in providing the necessary information. This step aims to ensure that all schools fulfill their obligations and contribute to the equitable distribution of scholarships.

If any school fails to submit the scholarship details even after the extended deadline, strict action will be taken against them. According to sub-section 4 of section 57 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Act, 2075, the permission or approval granted to the non-compliant school may be revoked. This underscores the commitment of the authorities to enforce both the process of lawmaking and its implementation.

The scholarships awarded to these 13,000 students reflect the positive impact of existing legislation. It highlights the significance of effective implementation to reinforce the importance of the law. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City remains dedicated to upholding the principles of fair access to education through its ongoing efforts.

The publication of the list of scholarship recipients will serve as a transparent and accountable record, demonstrating the commitment of the authorities to ensure that deserving students receive the support they need to pursue their education. This initiative also encourages private schools to fulfill their responsibilities in fostering an inclusive educational environment.

As the deadline approaches for schools to submit their scholarship details, the focus remains on promoting a culture of compliance among all educational institutions. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Office expects that the remaining schools will promptly fulfill their obligations, ensuring that no eligible student is left without the opportunity to benefit from scholarships.
