Kathmandu – In a recent development, the traffic police will now recognize driving licenses stored on the Citizen App. A recent announcement on social media by Citizen App revealed that this service is set to be implemented nationwide.

Furthermore, if you follow traffic rules while driving, presenting your driver’s license via the Citizen App during a police check will be considered valid.

The official statement from Citizen App reads, “We are pleased to inform you that the system for recognizing driver’s licenses displayed through the Citizen App during routine checks by Nepali citizens who are driving lawfully has been implemented across the country.”

This decision addresses longstanding concerns regarding the validity of digital licenses presented through the Citizen App. Initially, the government’s Citizen App aimed to consolidate various government services into one platform, but its acceptance as a valid form of identification was questioned.

According to Section 131 of the Vehicle and Traffic Management Act 2049, traffic inspectors and the Nepal Police traditionally required physical driver’s licenses or vehicle registration books for verification during investigations. The traffic police argued that digital licenses were not sufficient.

However, thanks to the collaboration between the Citizen App and the traffic police, drivers can now use their mobile phones to display their licenses, making the process more convenient.
