KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has extended the deadline for the appointment of principals. KMC published an open advertisement for principals a month ago with the aim of improving the quality of public education. The deadline expired on November 17, but the metropolis has extended it again because it did not receive the number of applications it was hoping for.

Some principals working in schools have appealed to the Supreme Court against the process of appointing principals in the metropolis. KMC spokesperson Nabin Manandhar said that the deadline was extended by one week because the city did not receive the number of applications it was hoping for. He said that the metropolis has devised procedures and standards for the appointment of principals to enhance the quality of public schools in the city. But, in numerous schools, principals are hired on a temporary basis and have not been granted permanent status for five years.

Manandhar added that many working teachers have approached various courts. KMC has also allocated a week to engage in discussions with these teachers. Out of the 89 public schools in the metropolis, KMC has already appointed principals for five years in 13 schools. The KMC is working on creating new procedures for choosing principals for the remaining 71 schools and simplifying the hiring process to onboard new teachers into the education system more efficiently.
