Nepal to Export 40 MW of Electricity to Bangladesh in Landmark Agreement

Date: May 17, 2023

Overview:

Nepal and Bangladesh have reached a significant agreement as Bangladesh plans to purchase 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Nepal. The decision was made during a secretary-level meeting of the ‘Joint Steering Committee (JSC)’ held between the two countries in Bangladesh on Tuesday.

In a groundbreaking development, Bangladesh has officially agreed to import 40 MW of electricity from Nepal. The decision was made during a productive meeting between the two countries held at the secretary level. Nepal’s Secretary of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Madhu Prasad Bhetuwal, disclosed that both nations have further committed to convening a tripartite meeting involving India, as Nepal’s electricity transmission to Bangladesh will pass through India.

To facilitate the electricity transfer, the involved parties—Nepal Electricity Authority, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited from India, and Bangladesh Power Development Board—have agreed to expedite the signing of a power sale agreement. This agreement would pave the way for the export of up to 40 MW of electricity generated in Nepal to Bangladesh.

Highlighting the historical context, it is worth noting that Nepal and Bangladesh initially entered into an agreement in August of the previous year. This initial agreement allowed Bangladesh to undertake a pilot project, importing 40 MW of electricity from Nepal as a trial run. The successful execution of the trial project has now led to the official decision to proceed with the purchase of electricity on a larger scale.

Conclusion: The decision by Bangladesh to import 40 MW of electricity from Nepal marks a significant milestone in regional cooperation and energy trade. This agreement showcases the growing collaboration between the two countries and paves the way for a more robust energy partnership in the future.
