Introduction

Tribhuvan University is the first university in Nepal, it is the first National intuition of Higher Education in Nepal. Tribhuvan University was established on Asar 11 2016 BS (June 25, 1959) and was named after the late King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah Dev. All the academic activities started in 1959 July under the Tribhuvan University Act 1956 and by 1961 TU started postgraduate courses in various subjects.

In the early years of its establishment, the administrative office of TU was also located in Tripureshwor and the Master’s classes under TU were held at Tripureshwor Campus. Only in the year 1967, the university was relocated to its main Campus at Kritipur.

TU is a non-profit, autonomous institution funded by the Government of Nepal. The University was declared the Central University by the government of Nepal on January 8, 2013. Tribhuvan University has four research centers under it.

Tribhuvan University stands as the largest and oldest university in the country. It has 5 institutes and 4 faculties under which 40 central departments are running along with 62 constituent campuses and 1062 affiliated colleges. The university has the largest network of affiliated colleges and campuses in Nepal.

TU was established to produce capable human resources for the overall development of the country by imparting quality higher education. Tribhuvan University provides extensive and quality knowledge, skills, and research in the field of arts, science, technology, and vocation. The university is the pioneer institute of Nepal and has been the same since 1959.

Institutes of Tribhuvan University

There are Five institutions under Tribhuvan University. They are:

  1. Institute of Engineering

tribhuvan university ioeThe Institute of Engineering was presented to its current state in 1972. Initially, it was founded in 1930 as Nepal’s First Technical School. In 1958, the institute of engineering was formally established as the Nepal Engineering Institute to be the formal institution to deliver engineering education. This institute has been producing outstanding engineers and engineering technicians for more than 80 years.

Institute of Engineering has gone through significant growth in the course of time, it has been responsive to the needs of the students and the profession. The institute has grown from producing mid and high-level technicians to Bachelor’s, Masters and Ph.D. graduates with quality knowledge and competency.

  1. Institute of Medicine

tribhuvan university iomUnder Tribhuvan University, the Institute of Medicine was established in 1972 to train every manpower required in the field of health and medicine. During its early years, IOM placed a high priority on the training of mid-level health workers.

Gradually, as per the country’s needs, it started training tertiary level health professionals, and bachelor’s degree programs were started in 1977. Accordingly, many other programs like MBBS were introduced as per the need, currently, IOM offers 63 different academic programs in the field of Medicine.

  1. Institute of Forestry

tribhuvan university iofInitially established as Nepal Forestry Institute in 1947 under the Government of Nepal, the Institute merged with TU in 1972 as the Institute of Forestry. IOF is the first and the only institute in the country fully committed to education and training in Forestry and Natural Resource Management. In the starting phases, it only offered a two-year certificate-level program. Now, the institute has programs up to Ph.D. Levels.

  1. Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science

Institute of Agriculture and Science began as a School of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture in 1957. Since then, many changes have been made to the institute, at the beginning, it provided training to Junior Technical Assistants in Agriculture. In 1968, it was upgraded to College and it provided a two-year Intermediate Agricultural Science program.  Since, 1978,  it was changed into the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science as we know it today.

The institute under Tribhuvan University aims to promote agricultural science and the training of manpower for agriculture development. Training, teaching, research, and technology are used to tackle the issues of agriculture and animal sciences, the institute caters for the needs of farmers of the country providing the students with education on the subject at different levels.

  1. Institute of Science and Technology

tribhuvan university iostUnder Tribhuvan University, the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST) was established in 1989. The institute now runs both Bachelor’s and Master’s level programs on various campuses. IoST works with well-equipped facilities like laboratories, libraries, infrastructure, and skilled teachers, and even advisory services to provide the best to the students.

This institute of excellence makes efforts to make science and technology valuable for humans that can satisfy their needs as well as improve their quality of living. There are various IT Courses in Nepal. Here, several research activities are conducted to prepare the learners for the future challenges humans may face with advancements in technology. 

Faculties of Tribhuvan University

There are Four Faculty under Tribhuvan University. They are:

  1. Faculty of Law

tribhuvan university folUnder Tribhuvan University, the Faculty of Law is one of the oldest faculties of the university. In 1954 AD, Law College was established with affiliation from the Patna University of India. The Faculty was established in 1959 at TU as the Institute of Law and was renamed the Faculty of Law in 1974 AD. The faculty of law has the objective to produce human resources with the base of legal excellence and competency in the field of law and justice.

  1. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties in terms of the courses and students under this faculty. This faculty prepares a strategic plan to move ahead with some specific vision, mission, and goals to produce quality human resources required for the nation. The faculty offers courses in a number of disciplines of Humanities and human resources

  1. Faculty of Management

The faculty of Management offers a wide range of cost-effective, socially relevant, and technologically driven management programs. The faculty is very involved to introduce new management courses as per the needs of the situation and students.

  1. Faculty of Education

tribhuvan university foeThe faculty of Education has the biggest network of teacher training in Nepal. Teacher Education was introduced in Nepal with the Basic Teacher Training Programme in 1947 after the realization of the need for teachers and teacher training by the Government. College of Education (COE) was established in 1956 with the recommendation of the  Nepal Education Planning Commission 1954-55, with the aim to produce trained manpower to teach. In 1971, COE was renamed as Institute of Education (IOE) and a decade later in 1982, the IOE was given the Status of Faculty of Education.

Research Centres of Tribhuvan University

  1. Centre for Economic Development and Administration (CEDA)

tribhuvan university CEDACEDA  was established in 1969 under the agreement of three parties; the Government of Nepal, Tribhuvan University, and the Ford Foundation. The center worked as an autonomous institution, till it was integrated into Tribhuvan University in 1975 after the implementation of the National Education System Plan. This Centre works as the policy research center to contribute to national development through analytical and problem-solving works in the areas of socio-economic and administrative development.

  1. Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS)

tribhuvan university CNASThe Institute of Nepal Studies was founded in 1969 based on the principle of the Institute of Nepalology established in 1966. In 1972, the Institute of Nepal Studies was replaced under the provision of the Tribhuvan University by the Institute of Nepal and Asian Studies; a teaching and research institute. In 1977.

The Institute was converted into the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies.  CNAS is a multi-disciplinary research center with researchers from different disciplines such as Sociology, Anthropology, History, Culture, Economics, and the Nepali language.

  1. Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST)

tribhuvan university RECASTIn 1977, the Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) was established within the organizational framework of Tribhuvan University to conduct research and development. Since 1999, RECAST served as a secretariat for the National Council of Science and Technology.

Through enhanced research and development, as well as improvement and dissemination of socioeconomically appropriate and environmentally sustainable technologies to the communities and institutions, the Center aims to contribute to the rapid and sustainable development of the country.

  1. Research Centre for Education Innovation and Development (CERID)

tribhuvan university CERIDThe National Education Committee established CERID in 1975 for the purpose of upgrading the quality of education through innovations and research. As of 1979, it has been a part of Tribhuvan University (TU) since it was handed over with the aim of improving the quality of education in the academic environment of TU with core professional researchers.

A significant number of research and innovative activities have been conducted by CERID that have helped to develop education and the nation.  Providing research, training, and innovation in education, it has committed itself to the development of human resources for nation-building in Nepal and to the promotion of quality education and research competency.

Where is Tribhuvan University Located?

Tribhuvan University is located in Kritipur, Kathmandu. The Central Administrative Office and the Central Campus of Tribhuvan University are in the north-eastern area of Kritipur. In the small and ancient town of Kritipur, the University covers over 154.77 hectares of land.
