TU’s Convocation Sets New World Record with 12,000 Graduates in One Venue

Kathmandu: In a historic milestone, the 49th convocation ceremony of Tribhuvan University (TU) took place at Kathmandu’s Dasharath Stadium, graced by President Ramchandra Paudel. This event marked a significant milestone, securing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records and earning recognition from the Official World Record Association. TU hosted an astounding 12,415 students, setting a global record for the largest convocation ceremony attendance.

Out of 74,749 students on the 61st grace list, 12,415 applied to participate. Among them, 8,098 were at the Bachelor’s level, 4,104 at the Master’s level, 44 pursuing MPhil, and 112 for PhD. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shivlal Bhusal, clarified that students passing from June 2022 to June 2023 were eligible.

Where, President Paudel emphasized the importance of educated youth in the process of nation-building, urging graduates to take on their responsibilities towards the country. He also stressed that investment in education is a collective effort by the state and encouraged graduates to utilize their knowledge and skills for the development of the nation.

While Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’ affirmed TU’s historic global achievement and committed to ending political appointments at the university. He stressed merit-based selection for officials, inviting Nepali experts worldwide to engage in open competitions for these positions.

The Prime Minister also discussed the issues facing higher education and emphasized the need for reforms to ensure that graduates can compete globally. He encouraged the university to maintain its esteemed reputation by pursuing increased achievement and stressed the importance of making higher education accessible to everyone, regardless of their social or economic status. The primary goal is to improve university education to prepare graduates for global competition.
